Raffaello Follieri, ex-boyfriend of Anne Hathaway, was sentenced to 54
months in prison yesterday for a scam in which he got $2.5 million from investors by telling them he could use Vatican connections to get
a discount on Catholic Church real estate in the U.S. In reality,
Follieri, who had connections only to low-level Vatican administrators,
used the money to rent a $37,000 per month apartment in Manhattan and
take exotic vacations. Follieri, who is Italian, gave up his right to
appeal and will probably be deported after his release from prison.
