The New York City Housing Authority is making thousands of additional units available to federal Section 8 voucher holders. The authority announced that it will remove 8,400 units from the public housing inventory, making them available to voucher holders at 21 housing complexes across the city. The decision is intended to help the agency pump money into the 21 cash-poor developments. New tenants with vouchers will be able to move into public housing projects, and the money from the vouchers will go to the Housing Authority, not to the private landlord. The Housing Authority is facing a $177 million shortfall in its operating budget in fiscal year 2009.
