Stuyvesant Town apartments without gas

Over 300 apartments in Stuyvesant Town have not had gas for a week. A spokesman for Tishman Speyer, which owns the three affected buildings on East 20th Street, said the gas had been turned off last Monday because of a leak, and that Con Edison would not turn the gas on again until repairs had been finished. The Tishman Speyer spokesman said meals are being provided for residents, who cannot cook without gas. But residents said the food provided doesn’t meet some people’s dietary restrictions and that there isn’t enough of it because non-residents sneak in to eat. Tishman Speyer bought the 11,200-unit Stuyvestant Town for $5.4 billion in 2006 but has had difficulty converting rent-regulated apartments there to market rate.
