The Cooper Square Hotel, at 25
Cooper Square on the Bowery, is opening tomorrow, as the city’s tourism
industry is hurting. According to hotel tracking firm PKF Consulting,
the average room rate in Manhattan fell 3 percent in October to $357 a
night, and the occupancy rate declined 8 percent over the same period
last year. Klaus Ortlieb, the co-owner of the Cooper Square Hotel,
plans to draw people to the 21-story, 145-room property with a $275
room rate, which he hopes to raise by $100 in a few months.
