The Astroland Rocket, which began as a ride at the 1960s amusement park
on Coney Island and later became a decoration on top of a food stand,
is in danger of being sold as scrap metal, according to an e-mail from
the Save Coney Island Group. According to the e-mail, Astroland will
pay to relocate the rocket if the group finds it a new home. The city is in negotiations
to acquire some Coney Island land from developer Joe Sitt, and
Astroland amusement park could reopen next year if a deal is reached
soon.
