Foreclosures hit Long Island

In 2006, only one community in Long Island had over 200 lis pendens,
the first step in the foreclosure process. This year, there were 12
such communities, and the number of lis pendens filed on Long Island
more than doubled between 2006 and 2008, a Newsday analysis found. In
the first eight months of 2008, there were nearly 11,600 lis pendens
filed on Long Island. The neighborhoods hit hardest have a variety of home
prices, types of houses and demographics. The residential and
commercial mortgages involved in 2008 totaled nearly $4 billion.
