Amid criticism and slowing of Bruce Ratner’s Atlantic Yards project in Brooklyn, Newark Mayor Cory Booker hopes to lure the Nets, currently
slated to move to Atlantic Yards, to Newark. Booker said the Nets
could play in Newark’s Prudential Center arena, which has already been
built and where the Nets are scheduled to play two preseason games in
October. The Atlantic Yards project has been mired in controversy,
including a lawsuit, not yet settled, challenging the state’s use of
eminent domain to seize property for the project. New Jersey politicians approached Ratner last year about moving the Nets to Newark, as first reported in The Real Deal.
