Some buildings with interesting histories in Manhattan have been turned into residential developments. The Hit Factory, a former music studio at 421 West 54th Street where Bob Dylan and Aretha Franklin have recorded songs, was converted into 27 loft-style condos. Before 40 East 61st Street was turned into a 20-story condominium, it was a sanitarium for public figures like Judy Garland and Oscar Hammerstein. And 201 East 69th Street, now a rental building, was once the headquarters for the FBI.
