Downtown Brooklyn’s Schermerhorn House looks like a luxury building, with natural light, storage space, a gym and a performance space. But half of the building will house low-income workers, mostly in the arts, and the other half will be for people who have been homeless or need daily support. Developers Hamlin Ventures and Time Equities began working on the project in 2001, hoping to create a mixed-income housing project with commercial space. The Actors Fund, which helps low-income stage professionals, and the Center for Urban Community Service joined the project to coordinate on-site job training and other services. Hamlin Ventures principal Abby Hamlin also built 14 Townhouses Across The Street that sold for more than $2 million each.
