Hundreds expected to protest rent hikes

According to Fox 5 News, hundreds of tenants are expected to show up at Cooper
Union tonight for the Rent Guidelines Board’s vote on proposed rent hikes
for the city’s one million rent-stabilized apartments. The board will vote on
the proposed 2 to 4.5 percent increase for one-year leases and 4 to 7.5 percent increase on
two-year leases for renewals starting October 1. They are also voting on new
minimum rent increases for tenants who have lived for more than six years in an
apartment and pay less than $1,000 a month. This year, landlords have been
organizing themselves and have alerted tenants about the necessity for those
rent hikes through public radio announcements.
