Berrywild opens, Waffin Tea Room closes … and more
On the Lower East Side, Taiwanese shop BaoHaus has opened at 137 Rivington Street between Norfolk and Suffolk streets.
In Soho, Realm Boutique has set up shop at 98 Greene Street between Spring and Prince streets, according to a press release. In Nolita, a second location of Italian spot Ballato’s may open on Mott StreetJust Below Houston Street. This Little Piggy Had Roast Beef is slated to open in the former Birdies space at 149 First Avenue Near 9th Street in the East Village.
After threats of being shut down, the Pink Tea Cup will remain open at 42 Grove Street between Bleecker and Bedford streets in the West Village. Chinatown Brasserie chef Joe Ng will open a dumpling and dim-sum spot called RedFarm at 529 Hudson Street near Charles Street. A new tea parlor called Bosie is soft opening later this month at 10 Morton Street near Bleecker Street. And organic, grass-fed burger restaurant Elevation will open its first Manhattan location in May at 103 West 14th Street, according to a press release.
Tim Horton’s has opened a location in the old Zen Palate space at 34 Union Square East. Nearby, Michael Huynh will open his fifth Manhattan location of Boaguette at 241 Third Avenue between 19th and 20th streets. In Chelsea, Doughnut Plant will open on the ground floor of the Chelsea Hotel at 220 West 23rd Street, in the former Dan’s Chelsea Guitar’s space.
Two boutiques called Project No. 8 and Opening Ceremony will be setting up shop on the ground floor of the Ace Hotel at 29th Street and Broadway.
Chocolat Michel Cluizel has opened a shop at 584 Fifth Avenue near 48th Street in Midtown. Further east, a seafood spot called Urban Lobster Shack has opened a new location on Third Avenue between 49th and 50th streets.
On the Upper West Side, a new lounge called 999 has replaced Le Negrita on Columbus Avenue near 109th Street. An Asian-French spot called Fatty Fish has opened in the former Solace space at 406 East 64th Street on the Upper East Side.
In Harlem, a Subway sandwich shop is opening in the old Sow’s Beauty Center at 281 St. Nicholas Avenue at the corner of West 124th Street. A New York Sports Club has opened at 1400 Fifth Avenue and 115th Street.
Brooklyn is now home to a Turkey Hill ice cream counter in Timmy’s Donuts at 2302 Knapp Street and Avenue W in Sheepshead Bay. Also in Sheepshead Bay, popular Brighton Beach café Café Glechik has opened a restaurant at 1655 Sheepshead Bay Road near Voories Avenue. Two pet supply stores may be coming to Franklin Avenue, one south of Eastern Parkway, and another between St. Johns Place and Sterling Place in Crown Heights. A non-denominational place of worship called the Church of Monika has opened at 255 17th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues in South Slope. Fast food joint Wendy’s has opened at 291 Livingston Street in Downtown Brooklyn, according to a press release. A combined café and retail shop called Urban Vintage will open soon at 44 Clifton Place on the corner of Grand Street in Clinton Hill. In Gowanus, the Indoor Farmers Market will open at the Old American Can Factory at 232 Third Street at Third Avenue. In Williamsburg, Khim’s Bar is slated to open at 280 Bedford Avenue near North 1st Street. A yet-unnamed high-end sushi joint may open on South 2nd Street and Wythe Street in South Williamsburg.
Up in the Bronx, three entrepreneurs hope to open Bronx Brewery in Hunts Point.
Amid these openings there have been some closings. On the Lower East Side, the former location of Dembitzer Brothers Electronics and the Chinese New Taoism Association will be demolished. Almost a year after opening for business at 161 Allen Street, the Waffin Tea Room is closing. Czech-Austrian coffee and sandwich shop Kinski at 128 Rivington Street near Norfolk Street is temporarily closed for renovations. In the East Village, vintage shop O Mistress Mine will close its East 11th Street location due to high rents, and another vintage shop called Atomic Passion may shutter on East 9th Street. Frozen yogurt chain Berrywild will close on 23rd Street near Fifth Avenue.Edge Noho closed Dec. 30 at 65 Bleecker Street. In Brooklyn Heights, Le Petit Marche has closed and an American restaurant called Bread and Butter will be opening in the space at 46 Henry Street, according to a call to the restaurant.
