A licensed safety inspector filed hundreds of reports over the past decade claiming city buildings and construction sites had normal levels of asbestos and lead, but never conducted any tests, he admitted in federal court late last month. The Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office, which is conducting an investigation into Saverio Tadoro’s fraud, said such actions may be widespread among asbestos and lead inspectors in the city. Tadoro’s case is just “the tip of the iceberg,” when it comes to failed regulation of similar schemes, one anonymous official said. [NYT]
