Domino Sugar Factory
(Updated: 4:45 p.m.) The City Planning Commission has approved the redevelopment
the Williamsburg waterfront’s Domino Sugar factory site with some minor changes to the original proposal.
As outlined in the agency’s final environmental
impact report on the $2 billion, 11.2-acre development, issued last
planned office building will be 50 feet shorter at its highest point in order to trim the shadow it
will cast over Grand Ferry Park, and the number of parking
spaces will be reduced to 1,428 from 1,694.
Conspicuously missing from the modifications, however, is a
reduction in the 2,200 planned residential units — a point pushed for
by Community Board 1, City Council member Stephen Levin and Assembly member Vito Lopez. The project also calls for 220,000 square feet of retail,
commercial and community space, a waterfront esplanade and a 150-room

The proposal will now go to the City
Council for final approval.
