After years of delays, the often scandal-ridden Aqueduct racino project is finally poised to have a positive financial impact on the local economy in the very near future, after developer Genting New York breaks ground next Sunday. But according to Crain’s, one subset of locals may see the opposite effect. A sprawling flea market, which sets up shop in the racetrack’s parking lot on Tuesdays and weekends between April and December, could close as a result of the impending new development — a loss that could cost thousands of local vendors their source of income. Operator Plain N Fancy Shows has a month-to-month lease on the South Ozone Park lot, and while Genting hasn’t officially announced a decision about the flea market’s fate, the company told the local community board this summer that it would have to relocate.
