Randering of the Aqueduct racino entrance

With Genting New York expected to break ground on the long-delayed Aqueduct racino project today, the Daily News reports that the first subcontractor the organization has hired is an electrical supply firm from Linden, N.J. that’s neither minority- or female-owned. One of the main points touted in project negotiations was that it would create local jobs for the surrounding southeast Queens neighborhoods that’s been plagued by unemployment. Per Genting’s agreement with the state, the company is supposed to spend 25 percent of its $350 million budget on subcontractors owned by women and minorities. One-quarter of the 1,300 construction workers it hires are also supposed to be drawn from those groups. The New Jersey firm that’s already signed on for the job has a $3.5 million contract to install four transformers and four electric circuit breaker boxes. Genting plans to have its first 1,600 video lottery terminals should be up and running by March. [NYDN]
