Thanks to a 2008 settlement between the city and state over the pollution of local waters while upgrading a local sewage plant, $7 million will now be allocated for waterfront improvements throughout the neighborhoods along Newton Creek, including Greenpoint, Maspeth and Long Island City. In the coming weeks, residents will be able to cast ballots with the City Parks Foundation to help allocate the money in a half-mile radius from the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. Some proposals include building a pedestrian plaza at American Playground between Milton and Noble streets, transforming Apollo Street into a park, a $4 million renovation of the Greenpoint Playground and creating a $5 million public boathouse at Manhattan Avenue.
