Birthplace of hip-hop facing foreclosure

A home considered the birthplace of hip-hop is facing a foreclosure
auction in November, Curbed reported. The home, at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue was the location of D.J. Kool Herc’s hip-hop parties in the early 1970s and it has already been in trouble for a number of years.

Two years ago, the then-new owners took the building out of the
Mitchell-Lama program
, forced tenants out and raised rents, but then
didn’t have enough funds to complete the process. During that same
time, the number of violations spiked to 598 from 82 . Now the
owners are having trouble paying their mortgage, which has a lien amount of $7.38 million. The auction is scheduled for Nov. 7. [Curbed]
