Stringer wants NYU expansion to be limited

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer would like New York University’s controversial expansion plan to be scaled down, the New York Times reported. Stringer is expected to make the recommendation in the next two weeks, as a requirement for his endorsement of NYU’s plans, the Times said.

Stringer said he was upset that NYU “seems to be backpedaling” on a proposal it put forward in January to shrink its plan, which, if it were not reduced in size, would involve building approximately the equivalent of another Empire State Building.

Last week Stringer blasted NYU in an interview. “When you propose a plan you know will overwhelm the existing community, you lose credibility with architects, planners and land-use experts, and you lose the heart and soul of a community,” Stringer said. [NYT]
