More delays for Meadowlands

New Jersey’s massive American Dream Meadowlands mall, previously called “Xanadu,” has yet more obstacles to clear, the Bergen County Record reported. The 2.7 million-square-foot project, which will be one of the nation’s largest shopping centers if and when it opens (currently it is slated to open in 2013), has yet to receive the sign-off it needs from the federal government, the Record said.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said it would “continue to object” to the proposed expansion, which includes water and amusement parks, until a formal plan to mitigate the impact on the New Jersey wetlands is submitted and approved. And the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority — the landlord for the project — has yet to submit an environmental impact statement that was due in February, the Record said.

This is not the $3.7 billion project’s first hurdle. The New York Jets and Giants object to the complex’s stadium. [The Record]
