Macerich, a real estate investment trust that owns retail properties nationwide, has big plans for drawing crowds to its Shops at Atlas Park in Glendale, Queens, Crain’s reported.

The mall, at 80-00 Cooper Avenue, opened in 2006 with an array of upscale shops but went bankrupt. Five years later, California-based Macerich bought the mall for $54 million and has been working to bring affordable national chains to the location.

Forever and Charlotte Russe are expected to open this summer. A 10,000-square-foot outdoor space for concerts and other events will be created. The shopping center is also working to partner with National Geographic Society to come in for weekly educational workshops.

Macerich also wants to add 100 street-level parking spots near the center, which already has two parking garages.

As previously reported, Macerich bought Kings Plaza mall in Brooklyn for $751 million in October. [Crain’s]Mark Maurer
