Steiner Equities President Doug Steiner has invested up to $85 million in the expansion and restructuring of Steiner Studios at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the New York Post reported.

The developer will add 150,000 square feet to the studio’s current 224,000 square feet of production space at 25 Washington Avenue to support its 130,000 square feet of sound stages, according to the Post. The expansion should be complete later this year.

The studio – which currently has 10 sound stages spread across 20 acres of space – is the largest movie and production facility east of Los Angeles, and has been used to shoot large-scale productions such as HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.” Recently, Brooklyn College’s Barry R. Feinstein Graduate School of Cinema leased 70,000 square feet on the fifth and sixth floors of 25 Washington Avenue, according to the Post, and is slated to open for classes in 2015.

The other floors will be used to host a sort of one-stop shop for filmmakers, with resources like post-production and set construction facilities, Steiner told the Post.

“Our goal was always to have everything under one roof, so to speak, which is the Los Angeles studio model,” Steiner said. “At the Navy Yard, where we have so much room, we hope to create that kind of environment.” [NYP]  – Hiten Samtani
