Times Square designer unveils glass library for Far Rockaway

Snøhetta, the architecture firm that transformed Times Square, has designed a library for a Sandy-devastated Queens neighborhood that includes a glass entrance and lots of sharp angles.

Far Rockaway will raze its old library, at 1637 Central Avenue, to make way for the new one. After the hurricane, the library served as a disaster relief center.

Snøhetta’s Eric Dykers presented the project to Queens Community Board 14. Features of the new library, which will be twice as big as the old one, include a triangular corner covered with glass for the entrance. The lobby will be an inverted pyramid that will collect “sunlight with the widest point at the top, narrowing towards the bottom, where the bulk of the program is located,” Dykers said.
