The Proton Center, a research facility that develops proton therapies for cancer patients, is in talks to take about 120,000 square feet in a planned 1.7 million-square-foot complex in East Harlem.

The center – administered by a smattering of hospitals, including Memorial Sloan Kettering and Mount Sinai — has been struggling to find a long-term home, and has been in talks to Take Spaces From West 57th Street to East 92nd Street.

The proton equipment the center houses requires a large rectangular plot of about 40,000 square feet, said Newmark Grubb Knight Frank’s Mark Weiss, who is leading the hunt for the Proton Center’s space. Finding enough contiguous space that also meet the center’s hefty energy requirements has been an onerous process, he told the New York Post.

The East Harlem site is bound by East 125th and East 127th streets between Second and Third avenues, according to the Post. Were the center to set up shop there, it would likely spur further development at the complex, according to the newspaper. [NYP, 1st item]Hiten Samtani
