Chetrit’s Jamaica project slapped with stop-work order

The city’s Department of Buildings issued a stop-work order Monday for the Chetrit Group’s conversion of a hospital building in Jamaica, Queens, to market-rate apartments.

Chetrit’s demolition of the interior of the Mary Immaculate Hospital near Downtown Jamaica has produced “excessive debris at the site,” DOB spokesperson Gloria Chin said in a statement to DNAinfo. “Work cannot continue until this matter is resolved.”

The building lies near the recently-completed Moda, which bills itself as an “upgraded-living” rental building offering amenities such as rooftop decks and a round-the-clock concierge, according to Moda’s website.

Representatives for the Chetrit Group didn’t respond to DNAinfo’s requests for comment.

The developer has previously received stop-work orders at his Hotel Chelsea renovation project, as The Real Deal reported. In August, Chetrit sold his stake in the Hotel Chelsea to Ed Scheetz’ King & Grove. [DNAinfo] – Hiten Samtani
