Work stopped at Hotel Chelsea after Chetrit pulls permits

Hotel Chelsea’s controversial and much-delayed conversion from a mostly rent-stabilized residential building to an upscale boutique hotel was hit with a stop-work order last month, after former owners the Chetrit Group and David Bistricer requested the cancellation of Department of Buildings permits authorizing the work.

In August, King & Grove, led by CEO Ed Scheetz, took full control of the property from Chetrit and Bistricer, as The Real Deal reported. But on December 20, Chetrit and Bistricer pulled permits authorizing the work, leading the city to shut down work at the project the very next day, according to city records seen by DNAinfo.

The permit issue was a result of a clerical error, a King & Grove spokesperson told the website, but work at the site still hadn’t resumed as of Wednesday. The company has applied for new permits and is expecting them to be approved by next week, the spokesperson added.

Neither Chetrit nor the DOB responded to DNAinfo’s request for comment. [DNAinfo]  – Hiten Samtani
