Nonprofit looking to raise $9M to buy Steinway Mansion

A nonprofit is looking to raise about $9 million to buy Astoria’s iconic Steinway Mansion, the former digs of the man who founded the piano company.

The 6,000-square-foot stone mansion at 18-33 41st Street has received no serious offers since it hit the market in 2011, asking $3.5 million. Members of Friends of Steinway Mansion hope to use the property as a mansion and learning center, rather than as an actual home.

Last year, the mansion’s current owner was considering selling the property and three of the seven plots of land that it sits on for a reduced price of $1.9 million. Preservationist groups have been concerned that a sale of the land to another buyer could pave the way for a large commercial development, as previously reported.
