Governor Andrew Cuomo is cracking down on dozens of state’s residents who live in rent-regulated housing but are also seeking an exemption on school property taxes.

The state Department of Taxation and Finance found 156 tenants of rent-regulated housing who re-applied for School Tax Relief, also known as a STAR exemption, last year. The administration sent letters to the tenants, providing a deadline of two months to remove themselves from one of the two programs.

If the home is not the tenants’ primary residence, the landlord of the rent-regulated complex can then move to repossess the unit.

“These programs are meant to deliver much-needed rent and property tax relief to New York residents, and any corruption of the system hurts the hard-working tenants and homeowners who follow the rules,” Cuomo said, as cited by the New York Daily News. [NYDN]Mark Maurer
