Former Harte & Co. factory sale: Did it close?

Superfund site was slated to change hands last month, contract says

A Superfund development site near megadevelopment Greenpoint Landing may have changed hands recently, but whether the sale ever closed remains uncertain.

The abandoned 1930s Harte & Company factory at 280 Franklin Street in Brooklyn went into contract nearly two years ago, and city records show the sale was slated to close in February, the Brooklyn Eagle reported.

Nuhart & Company, which ran a shower curtain and upholstery manufacturing operation at the site, has owned the yellow-brick building since 1983, the article said. The buyer in the memorandum of contract was an LLC by the name of Dupont Street Developers.

The 31,000-square-foot building, bound by Clay, Commercial and Dupont streets, is positioned at the mouth of Newtown Creek. Preservationists are considering seeking a landmark designation for the property, which was contaminated by toxic waste stored underground, according to the paper. [BrooklynEagle]Angela Hunt
