Cornell Tech Campus residential tower revealed

Cornell University unveiled a number of renderings for the planned tech campus on New York City’s Roosevelt Island last week, and now the design for the project’s residential tower is out.

Plans for the 26-story, 285-foot tall tower were presented to Community Board 8 this week by Andrew Winters, director of capital projects and planning for Cornell NYC Tech, and Blake Middleton of Handel Architects. The tower, which is being developed by Hudson Companies and the Related Companies, will house students, staff and faculty at the northeast corner of the development site.

The building will hold no basement, due to flooding concerns, and the first tow floors will house amenities and the highest a meeting space. Two floors will provide faculty and staff housing, while the remainders will be student lodging. Each floor will total 10,600 square feet, and the building will hold a total of 356 units.

A few community board members objected to the building’s proposed height, concerned it would “disrespect the bridge” and interrupt views. [Curbed] — Julie Strickland
