Central Park West church to be rechristened as condo building

Buyer pays $26M for property, but must keep the landmarked building's exterior intact

The buyer of a landmarked Beaux-Arts church overlooking Central Park will transform the house of worship into a condo building.

The Crenshaw Christian Center at 231 Central Park West will be divided into 20 to 30 apartments, the New York Daily News reported. An LLC dubbed 361 Central Park West purchased the property for $26 million, or $866 per square foot, according to documents filed with the city today.

The developer will have to preserve the exterior and stained glass windows due to the building’s landmark status.

The Los Angeles-based Christian organization bought the church a decade ago for $14 million, according to the Daily News. Chip Porter of Newmark Grubb Knight Frank brokered the deal. [NYDN]Tom DiChristopher
