Chicago-based real estate investment trust General Growth Properties is slated to present its plans tomorrow to the Department of City Planning for the 445,000-square-foot expansion of the 85-acre Staten Island Mall.

The shopping center at 2655 Richmond Avenue, located in the Heartland Village residential development, would gain several new buildings by 2017.

Plans call for a 75,000-square-foot addition to Macy’s, a 53,000-square-foot movie theater, a 50,000-square-foot supermarket and a three-story garage. Two adjacent lots would merge for the construction to take place.

“The project would occur on underutilized land within an existing concentration of retail uses,” according to an environmental study cited by the New York Observer. “Currently, despite the commercial success of the mall, the applicant believes that the surface parking lots surrounding the mall are underutilized.” [NYO] — Mark Maurer
