Plans for graffiti space at 5Pointz development emerge

Artists will be allowed to tag the walls in a 30,000-square-foot courtyard

New renderings by HTO Architect offer a hint of how Jerry Wolkoff’s G&M Realty will accommodate artists at the former 5Pointz graffiti hub it is developing into a two-story mixed-use residence at 22-44 Jackson Avenue in Long Island City, Queens.

Graffiti artists will be free to tag a 40-by-80-foot space above the new development’s garage and sections of a wall along a 30,000-square-foot courtyard, the New York Daily News reported. The development will also have about 20 artists’ studios, according to the newspaper.

In November, Wolkoff whitewashed the exterior of the 5Pointz building, which is scheduled to be completely demolished by October. At least one artist who used to tag 5Pointz is not appeased by the concession.

“They’re going to be in the back underneath the train and, to be honest with you, it has no type of social impact to the community,” artist Carlos Gane told the newspaper. [NYDN]Tom DiChristopher
