In New York City’s ravenous residential market all that is solid melts into condos. And here are five religious buildings currently being converted to luxury housing to prove it, via 6sqft.
Pentecostal Church at 541 Leonard Street
This Greenpoint church was redeveloped in October 2013 into three loft-style apartments, with asking prices for the three units topping $2 million. However, the building struggled to find buyers and was once again converted, this time to a rental.
King’s Temple Seventh Day Adventist Church
Brooklyn developer Boaz Gilad is reviving this old Romanesque Revival-style church at 991 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights. Plans call for a three-story extension and feature a total of 27 apartments.
The orthodox Anshei Meseritz at 515 East Fifth Street in the East Village was built in 1910. But more recently, it has signed a $1.2 million, 99-year lease with East River Partners to transform the interior of the building into luxury condos. The synagogue is relocating to a space in the basement.
St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral Orphanage
The former orphan asylum at the historic St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral in Soho, was built in 1826 and became a city landmark in 1966. Since then the church has sold building to Hamlin Ventures, which plans to convert the property into two single-family townhouses and eight condos.
Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church
Built in 1893, the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, formerly known as the Church of Eternal Hope, located at 140 West 181st Street in Washington Heights, is being renovated into a mixed-use property. The congregation will remain on the first floor and lower level. [6sqft] — Christopher Cameron
