Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 towers to move forward following settlement

Temporary restraining order has been lifted

Two planned residential towers at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 can move forward with construction after a park advocacy group settled its lawsuit against the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation.

The group had argued that the city organization reneged on an agreement with its last-minute plan to include affordable housing and did not carry out proper environmental studies, according to the New York Daily News. The advocates were able to secure a temporary restraining order, which has now been lifted.

While the settlement, filed Wednesday in the New York State Supreme Court, means that construction of the towers will almost certainly be happening, the group was able to negotiate for several more public hearings. The Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation will also have to file amendments to its plan to include affordable housing.

Opponents had argued that funds from the towers were not necessary to support the park, which is financed by revenues from residential developments.

“This is great news for the millions who enjoy Brooklyn Bridge Park,” said a spokesperson for the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation. “We look forward the moving ahead with a fantastic project that will plug the final remaining gap in funding for this world class open space.” [NYDN] — Tess Hofmann
