Mesmerizing video distills 24 hours of subway traffic into minutes

It can be difficult to grasp the sheer immensity and number of trains in the New York City subway system — especially when it seems like your train will never come. But one savvy data scientist just solved that problem for you in a succinct and hypnotic video.

“I wanted to make the map because I had never seen it before,” Will Geary, a data science grad student at Columbia, told Curbed.

He says that he collected subway station locations from the MTA website, and then “manually scraped weekday timetables for each subway line to create a unique data set.”

And naturally it needed music, so he set the video to Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” (of course).
