Ceiling in 1065 Park Ave. apartment collapses

The concrete ceiling in one of Park Avenue’s best co-ops collapsed early this morning. The incident created a cloud of dust and debris, but luckily there were only minor injuries.

The collapse occurred in the midst of a three-year long, $2 million renovation of the building’s lobby and outdoor plaza, according to the New York Post. Last week, workers installed a concrete board and stucco drop ceiling.

“The concrete board was evidently too heavy,” Malcolm Karlin, a resident who sits on the board, told the Post. “Evidently something went wrong. It just couldn’t hold. It all came down around 9:30.”

Two workers were hurt, but not seriously, officials said.

“Some people on the third floor heard it, a little rumble,” Karlin added. “Look, we’re lucky. It’s Saturday morning. Half the people in the building are gone for the summer. We’re lucky.”
