NYCHA to support legal battles against the city

The city is lawyering up against the city. In a first-in-the-nation program, the Housing Authority will now pay lawyers to fight for evictees. Specifically, the free legal services will be provided to New York City Housing Authority tenants facing eviction by the city-run agency’s own lawyers, according to the New York Post.

Mayor Bill de Blasio signed the bill into law yesterday, which will add $93 million over the next five years for legal representation for all low-income tenants in Housing Court.

However, critics think the money would be better spent on infrastructure in the city’s crumbling public housing.

“Any money spent would be better served putting back into the NYCHA infrastructure,” Joseph Strasburg, president of the Rent Stabilization Association, told the Post. “The infrastructure is literally falling apart.”
