Attention those new to New York and those old to New York wondering how to properly show their emotions this holiday season: tipping building staff is part of it.

Exact amounts can be hard to predict — especially for newbies — but fortunately a plethora of resources are available to help guide you:

Curbed is recommending the proposed tips issued by Brick Underground:

  • Super, resident manager: $75-$175 on average (broad range: $50-$500)
  • Doorman and/or concierge: $25-$150 on average (broad range: $10-$1,000)
  • Porters, handyman, and maintenance staff: $20-$30 on average (broad range: $10-$75)
  • Garage attendant: $25-$75 on average (broad range $15-$100)

Two Trees Management recommends slightly different rates: $100-$300 for a super; $75-$200 for a handyman; $25-$100 for a porter; and $75-$125 for a concierge.

Or, brokerage Triplemint has made an online calculator where you can plug in your personal housing details and end up with an appropriate tip.

Either way, a poll last year showed 36 percent of renters in buildings without doormen didn’t do any tipping, while a much lower percentage of owners skipped out on tipping. Don’t become a statistic; do the right thing.
