The longtime Manhattan home of movie star Greta Garbo has sold for $8.5 million.

Garbo bought the apartment at the Campanile at 450 East 52nd Street in 1954, and it served as her primary residence until she died in 1990, according to the Wall Street Journal. The unit sold for 43 percent more than its $5.95 million asking price.

The three-bedroom apartment overlooking the East River spans 2,900 square feet and still contained a significant amount of Garbo’s furniture and artwork, although they were not part of the sale.

Craig Reisfeld, Garbo’s great-nephew, told the Journal his family does not live in New York anymore and identified the buyers only as fans of Garbo who were not planning to “gut” her old home.

“I think they’re going to be great stewards,” he said. [WSJ]Eddie Small
