Earlier this week, an announcement of a new 407-acre state park slipped into Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s 2018 State of the State. As it turns out, the park will be open next year and paid for entirely by governments funds, a conveniently-timed boon, reports the Architect’s Newspaper.

The park ranges over two sites, cut in half by Hendrix Creek, that used to be landfills before a $235 million clean up in 2009 cleared the way for landscaping to be planted along the waterfront strip. The land, which runs along two parkways and is near East New York’s Gateway Mall, was put into the care of the National Park Service and is now part of the Gateway National Recreation Area.

The park will be developed by New York State Parks.
