Obscure religious group’s moving van is evidence the Waldorf condo conversion is still happening

Anbang Insurance Group may still own the Waldorf Astoria (for now), but the hotel’s furniture and cutlery belong to the lord.

Olde Good Things, a company controlled by the Pennsylvania-based Church of Bible Understanding, has been carting off fixtures from the hotel in trucks, Bloomberg reported. It’s unlikely evidence that the conversion of the hotel to luxury condominiums is moving along as scheduled.

Some items, such as steak knives and crystal light fixtures, are already for sale on the company’s website. Olde Good Things previously sold items from the Plaza Hotel and the old New York Times headquarters, among other properties.

The church was founded by a former vacuum cleaner repair man who claims to be the reincarnation of the prophet Elijah. It inspired a 1996 Seinfeld episode about a cleaning company operated by a religious cult.

The Waldorf Astoria is in the middle of a condo conversion, but uncertainties abound. Last week the Chinese government seized control of the property’s owner, Anbang, supposedly to prevent the troubled insurer from collapsing.
