Landmarks says 29-story Clinton Hill tower can rise next to historic church

Commission approved Jeffrey Gershon's resi project on Tuesday

Hope Street Capital’s prayers have been answered.

The company received approval on Tuesday from the Landmarks Preservation Commission to build its 29-story residential project at 550 Clinton Avenue next to the landmarked Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew, according to the Brooklyn Eagle.

The 19th-Century church is located at 520 Clinton Avenue and was designed in the Northern Italian Romanesque style by architect John Welch. The two entities will combine into one zoning lot for the project so Hope Street can use the church’s 60,000 square feet of air rights in its development, which will stand 312 feet tall and have ground-floor retail.

Hope Street, led by Jeffrey Gershon, previously went before Landmarks in January, when the organization said the design of their project made it look like it was leaning over the church. The organization was more amenable to the design Hope Street presented at its most recent meeting.

The company closed on its $60 million purchase of a former Jehovah’s Witnesses building in Dumbo at 74 Adams Street late last year. [Brooklyn Eagle]Eddie Small
