An LLC bought the National Academy Museum townhouse for $25M in June

The former National Academy Museum building will be converted to a single-family home.

An application was filed to convert the gallery space into a residential building, according to the Department of Buildings. The plans also call for a modest expansion of the building, at 1083 Fifth Avenue, to 15,197 square feet from 15,086 square feet.

In June, an LLC linked to merchant bank Raine Group bought the building, which was listed by the Corcoran Group’s Carrie Chiang, for $25 million. The six-floor, five-bedroom townhouse was part of a larger, 42,000-square-foot complex housing the National Academy Museum and School. It announced in 2016 that it would list the properties for a total of $120 million, due to high maintenance costs.

The townhouse was remodeled in 1913 by architect Ogden Codman, Jr. The home was once owned by railroad heir Archer Milton Huntington. He and his wife donated the townhouse and adjacent buildings to the National Academy in 1940.
