Hudson Companies to redevelop Greenpoint Hospital into affordable housing

Hudson Companies will team up with two community groups to redevelop the former Greenpoint Hospital in Brooklyn into a mixed-use development with 512 units of affordable housing and a new building for an existing homeless shelter.

The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development selected Hudson Companies’ proposal for the 146,000-square-foot development site at 288 Jackson Street with the local community development corporation St. Nicks Alliance and Project Renewal, a nonprofit organization that works with the homeless.

The partners will develop two new buildings on the 3.4-acre site with more than 400 units for extremely-low, very-low and low-income households, according to HPD. They’ll also convert two buildings on the site: one into more than 100 affordable homes for seniors and the other into a location for two homeless shelters.

Council Member Antonio Reynoso said the hospital has stood underutilized and partially vacant since shutting its doors in 1982.

“Now, 36 years later our city faces an increasing housing and homelessness crisis and it is almost impossible for New Yorkers in districts like mine to obtain decent affordable housing,” he said.

Back in 2012, the city picked a developer for the site, but the developers dropped out.
