The developer of an 8-story East Village hotel just hit a major roadblock

An eight-story hotel planned for the East Village might not come to the neighborhood after all.
The City Council subcommittee on zoning and franchises unanimously rejected the proposal for the hotel on Thursday, according to Curbed. It would be located at 27 East 4th Street next to the neighborhood’s Merchant’s House Museum, which is nearly 200 years old. Representatives for the museum argued that constructing a hotel right next door would destroy it, and City Council members agreed.
Kalodop II Park Corp. has put together the hotel proposal. Although the Landmarks Preservation Commission had approved the project back in 2014, the local community board unanimously rejected it in June. In July, the museum filed a lawsuit against the City Planning Commission and developer, saying that they hadn’t adequately represented how dangerous building the hotel would be for the house.

The proposal goes to the full City Council next week. It is unlikely to pass without the support of local member Carlina Rivera, who said she is open to talking to the developers to reach a solution but has made protecting the museum her top priority. [Curbed] – Eddie Small
