Campbell Soup boils down its Connecticut office

Company to close Norwalk operations, relocate employees to Camden

Campbell Soup is trading one end of the Tri-state area for another.

Campbell is closing its office in Norwalk, Connecticut, the company announced Wednesday. The Stamford Advocate reported the 105,000-square-foot office, which is where 170 Pepperidge Farm office employees are based, is expected to be offered for sale.

The Norwalk offices have been in use for more than 75 years.

Campbell is consolidating its office-based employees to its headquarters in Camden, New Jersey, starting in the middle of the year. The company doesn’t plan to eliminate commercial roles, but employees who don’t relocate may receive severance benefits and job placement support.

The company is also closing offices of its snack business in North Carolina, though production operations in both states will continue. The Pepperidge Farm bakery in Bloomfield, for instance, will remain and add to its 400-person workforce.

Critically, the consolidation will also save the company money as early as this year and a projected $10 million by the 2026 fiscal year.

To account for the consolidation — 1,600 are expected to work out of its headquarters — Campbell is upgrading the Camden complex. In March, the company will begin a $50 million renovation on improved workspaces and new buildings with amenities, such as daycare, a cafe and a health and fitness center.

Campbell Soup is best known for the product in its moniker, but it has grown to be one of the largest processed food companies in the nation since it was founded in 1869. Other brands under the Campbell umbrella include Pepperidge Farm, which was acquired in 1961, Pace Foods, Swanson, Prego and Snyder’s-Lance.
