Canon will file plans for its new headquarters in Long Island today. The five-story, 690,000-square-foot Melville facility will be Long Island’s biggest green project. The site, once 52 acres of pumpkin farmland, will resemble a park with buildings taking up about a third of the land. Reflecting pools, walking paths, trees and drought-resistant vegetation will cover the rest of the area. The buildings, built with energy efficient materials, will maximize natural light in a campus-like headquarters. Canon hopes to achieve silver status from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. The site is  on Walt Whitman Road, south of the Long Island Expressway.
