Society bachelor lists West Village townhouse for $20 million

Man-about-town and high-end art patron John de Neufville, once heralded by New York Magazine as one of the city’s most eligible bachelors, has listed his West Village townhouse at 81 Horatio Street for $20 million, according to data from Streeteasy.com.

The property, which hit the market today, is listed with husband-and-wife team Jeremy and Robin Stein of Sotheby’s International Realty.

The property appears to be the second most expensive townhouse available in the neighborhood, following 87 Jane Street, which is listed at $35 million with Jim St. Andre of Peter McCuen & Associates.

De Neufville, who reportedly attended the Lawrenceville school with socialite Tinsley Mortimer and her now ex-husband Topper Mortimer, was at one point said to be dating Genevieve Bahrenburg, daughter of former Hearst Magazines president D. Claeys Bahrenburg, and is a regular in the society pages. Recently, he was spotted at the New York Botanical Garden’s annual Winter Wonderland Ball alongside celebrities Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon, Tea Leoni and David Duchovny.

De Neufville bought the six-story Horatio Street townhouse in 2002, according to public records, and completed a massive renovation of the property, which has various entertainment rooms, six bedrooms and five-and-two-half bathrooms. The amount he paid for the property was not immediately clear from public records.

Jeremy Stein said the renovation was a “labor of love” for its owner, who viewed it as “more of a project” than a long-term residence.

The townhouse now features modern appliances and technology while still maintaining its historic character, Stein said.

“You can pretty much turn the house on and off from an iPad on a beach somewhere,” he quipped.

De Neufville worked extensively with the Landmarks Preservation Commission and the Department of Buildings to put a new stoop on the house, and to ensure that the space could be utilized to its full capacity, Stein said.

De Neufville could not be reached for comment on the listing.
