740 Park bling ring investigated as inside job

Recent jewel thefts at the uber-luxe co-op 740 Park Avenue are being investigated as an inside job, the New York Post reported.

“It has to be someone from the inside, a building worker or a housekeeper. It’s a very secure building. No one is going to just walk in and gain access to these apartments,” a law enforcement source told the Post. The thieves have been doing their work since May and have successfully nabbed more than $250,000 in jewels while their victims were away, sources told the Post. A worker with access to a key cabinet was questioned by law enforcement, the Post said, before he was dismissed from the co-op building. But no arrest was made because of insufficient evidence, a source told the Post.

None of the stolen items have been recovered as of yet, according to a source cited by the Post.

June Dyson, a 95-year-old socialite and widow of financier Charles Dyson is among the victims. An $82,000 diamond bracelet and a rhinestone pin of hers disappeared between May 31 and June 16, the Post said.

Hedge funder David Ganek and his novelist wife Danielle Ganek lost diamond earrings, two Patek Philippe watches and more jewelry worth nearly $100,000.

For now, an investigation with the NYPD is ongoing, and a building representative told the Post it will cooperate with the proceedings.

“We can confirm that there is an ongoing investigation and that we are cooperating with the authorities,” Amy Goltzer, a spokeswoman for Brown Harris Stevens, the building’s manager. [NYP] — Julie Strickland
