Taggers vent 5Pointz frustrations on whitewashed walls

Without missing a beat, graffiti taggers hit Jerry Wolkoff’s newly-whitewashed 5Pointz complex with a smattering of tags early Wednesday morning.

Painters added messages sounding off on the Long Island City building owner’s decision to cover much of the graffiti art with white paint yesterday, voicing messages such as “Jerry I will never forgive you” and “you destroyed our home.”

One message scribbled inside a loading dock at the heart of the complex took direct aim at Wolkoff’s plans to replace the building at 45-46 Davis Street with two high-rise rental towers: “We want to win just once,” the tagger wrote.

Marie Cecile Flaguel, the spokeswoman for 5Pointz, told DNAinfo that her group was not responsible for the messages and had discouraged the public from tagging the freshly-painted building.

“Meres expressly said yesterday, ‘I don’t want people to touch the building, I want the building to stay white,'” she told DNAinfo, referencing 5Pointz’s head curator Jonathan Cohen, who is known as Meres One.

Even so, she told DNAinfo that she expects onlookers to be more likely to tag the building with the original art gone. Before, she said, taggers respected the work enough to leave them alone.
